Guatemala experienced a political earthquake today, after the seventh Criminal Court of First Instance orderedo the suspension of the juridical personality of the Movimento Sementiwhose candidate, Bernardo Arvalo de Leon, He aspires to the presidency of the country after finishing second in the June 25 elections. This news came on the same day that the Supreme Electoral Tribunal formalized that Arvalo de León will contest the Presidency of Guatemala on August 20 with the candidate of the National Unity of Hope, Sandra Torres, who was the most voted in the first round.

The President of the TSE, Irma Palenziahas already clarified that this decision of the Seventh Court does not imply a repeat of the elections, nor does it eliminate the candidacy of Árvalo de León, although it has indicated that it has not yet been informed of the order to legally suspend the Seed Movement, resulting from a request from the Prosecutor against impunity in Guatemala (FECI).

Precisely, he was the head of the FECI, Raffaello Curruchiche, who in the minutes before the official results of the elections of 25 June, explained that he had started a new case of corruption and impunity called ‘Seed Corruption’, following a complaint from a citizen in May 2022, who claimed to have been “illegally” attached to this political party, which was the second most voted force in the elections.

Curruchiche, who is himself included in a US list of corrupt actors, said a scientific test concluded that the complainant’s signature and handwriting were “forged,” so he noted that “there are indications that perhaps, more than 5,000 citizens illegally joined the Seed Movement forging his handwriting and signature”.

Also, add that were enrolled in the political formation “12 deceased persons”, while indicating that Semilla paid 7 quetzales (less than one euro) for each signature collected for the constitution of the party, which amount to 175,000 quetzales (21,000 euros) “ignoring its source of funding, which would give rise to the possible commission of the crime of laundering of money or other benefits”.

For now, this research it would have no repercussions on the candidacy of Árvalo de León to the Presidency of Guatemala, as specified by the president of the TSE, who communicated that, starting today, both the Semilla candidate and the UNE candidate can start campaigning for the second round of the August 20 elections. However, he stressed that the court must carefully analyze the judicial decision once the judicial decision is served.

At the gates of the TSE, dozens of citizens have focused on defending democracy and they sang choruses like “this criminal structure is about to fall, this criminal structure is about to fall”, in reference to the so-called “corrupt pact” to which they attribute the intention to leave the leftist candidate Bernardo Arvalo de León out of the electoral contest, son of the man who was president of the Central American country between 1945 and 1951 Juan José Arvalo.

The second and unpredictable candidate in the running is a politician, diplomat, sociologist, writer, 64 years old and current deputy of the Seed Movement of Guatemala since 2020. Born in Montevideo (Uruguay), he was ambassador of this country in Spain between 1995 and 1996. He also held the position of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1994 and 1995 during the Government of Ramiro de Leon Carpio.
