Top journalist identified as person suspended by BBC

The wife of Huw Edwards, a top BBC figure, said in a statement that her husband suffered from mental health issues. Police said there were no indications of a crime.

LONDON – The BBC staffer has been suspended over allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct was identified on Wednesday by his wife as Huw Edwards, presenter of the BBC evening news and one of its most important and illustrious figures.

At the same time, London police said there was no evidence Edwards had committed a crime, after a newspaper last week reported that an unnamed BBC personality paid more than £35,000or nearly $45,000, to a teenager in exchange for explicit pictures over a period of several years starting when the person was 17.

Edwards’ wife, Vicky Flind, released a statement on behalf of her husband late Wednesday evening, saying he had been hospitalized for “serious mental health problems“and that he would respond to the allegations when he recovered.

“The events of the past few days have made matters worse,” Flind said.

“He suffered another serious episode and is now receiving hospital treatment, where he will remain for the foreseeable future.”

The Metropolitan Police investigated the allegations after being contacted by the BBC.

In a statement released shortly before Flind’s, police said detectives had concluded their investigation and “determined there is no information to indicate a crime was committed.”

A lawyer for the teenager told the BBC on Monday that the report, published in the London tabloid the sun last Friday was “garbage“and that nothing inappropriate or illegal had occurred between your client and Edwards.

The news that Edwards is the target of the investigation no longer came as a huge surprise – his name had been circulating widely on social media for days – but it nonetheless arrived with a bang in Britain.

At 61, Edwards, a veteran Welsh presenter who joined the BBC as a trainee in 1984, is synonymous with the network for many British viewers.

It was he who broke the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September, wearing a dark suit to commemorate the solemn moment.

Edwards later directed the BBC’s coverage of the Queen’s funeral; as well as the Coronation of King Carlos III in May; the prince’s wedding harry and meghan Markle in 2018; and the last general election, in 2019.

presents regularly “BBC News at Ten”the leading evening news programme, and is one of the highest-paid stars, earning up to £439,999 ($571,000) a year, according to the BBC’s annual report.

For the BBC, this is the latest in a series of crises stemming from the behavior or statements of its presenters.

The best known case was that of Jimmy Saville, Famous comedian and BBC presenter who was accused of being a serial sex offender following his death in 2011.
